The colour Yellow

Spring and autumn are my preferred seasons but it's February and it's a typical  miserable grey and cold wintry day here so I have been dreaming about slightly warmer days and happy spring flowers.

The lovely Rike from Rike's Art is hosting the colour yellow theme at  AJJ  this month and spring is the first thing that comes to mind (other than bananas and custard) when I think of yellow :) so I just had to paint some spring flowers.
A mixed media piece using - gouache, acrylic inks and Derwent artbars.

Yellow isn't one of my favourite colours as we once spent a weekend,  many years ago, painting a double room a yellowy mustard colour with dark brown ceilings - when that fashionable. When it had all dried properly the colour was totally different than the paint chip sample and than we imagined - it was more of a bright custard yellow and not something we could live with.... so it all had to be painted again.... a pale green if I remember, probably on 2 walls and white on the others.

I finished the remainder of the cards I was making yesterday so I look forward to challenging myself with this colour this month and see if I can grow to like it more :)

Thank you so much for stopping by today.
I hope you have a great Friday and lovely weekend.
Keep warm and safe especially if you are somewhere cold and icy.

  2. I love your "Dreaming of Springtime"-page with these beautiful yellow and orange tulips, you made it gorgeous although yellow is not your favourite colour! You had bad experience with this colour, so I can understand. But I find much yellow even in your background of your blog :))
Thank you so much for your fabulous first entry to my yellow theme at AJJ!
    Wish you a happy weekend!
    Liebe Grüße, Rike xx

  3. You painted those tulips dso beautiful dear Gill! Tulips are one of my favourite flowers. I am happy you support Rike's theme even though you don't like yellow...lol!
Great first entry and I hope you will have some more ideas for yellow! I am sure you will have ideas! Thank you very much! Happy weekend dear Gill.
I do love yellow, it's the wonderful warmth of it that makes me happy and is good for my mind.
But no yellow in clothes for me. It doesn't look good on me.
    Big hugs,
    Susi

  4. I love your painting Gill, those tulips look beautiful. I this this colour and your page shouts springtime, although like yourself I might not like it painted on my walls.
    Have a good weekend Gill

  5. Oh I do like your tulips and the background is superb too. Gouache, acrylic inks and Derwent artbars! that is a fascinating combination of art materials. I've never used gouache but every time I see it used (as here) I want to get some gouache to play with. My dislike of yellow also stems from a decorating disaster 😣. Do paint chips ever reflect the actual paint colour?
Have a great weekend, you and Dave.

  6. Tulips are the first harbingers of spring and the yellow tulips are like sunshine. Your image looks nice and is a promise of coming springtime. Well done.

  7. I think this is going to be a true challenge for many of us! Your yellow tulips are beautiful! The tale of your painting reminded me that we had a very long wall of mustard/custard for a while before changing it to.....green! Hugs,Chrisx

  9. For someone who is not fond of yellow, this is incredible. These tulips make me wish for springtime. They are beautiful. Like you, I may learn to like yellow by thee end of the month, too. Thanks for sharing them with us at Art Journal Journey.

  10. This really is a beautiful springtime piece Gill, it's as if the sun is peeping through the tree's in the background with it's rays capturing sight of those sweet tulips putting them in the spotlight. Yellow certainly is one of those colours that is hit and miss with many but we have to agree when it comes to nature we could not do without it. A beautiful page, Thank you for sharing.
Take care and have a super weekend Hugs Tracey xx

  15. Such a beautiful painting! Your flowers really pop against the lovely background that you created 😁. I hope you had a lovely week, we've been busy with a burst water pipe due to the freezing temperatures, luckily it was in one of our outside buildings and it is all sorted now but it wasn't much fun without the heating until it was fixed - brrrr! ...lol 😉. Stay warm and wishing you a happy weekend! J 😊 x

  16. This is brilliant, I love your happy painting! Yellow is one of my favourite colours, but I don't think I would fancy it on my walls, especially with a brown ceiling lol. Have a very happy and creative week, Sue xx

  19. It may not be your favourite colour (I feel the same and did something similar a long time ago) but you've used it beautifully here. Your tulips look gorgeous - just like the ones I love to have in my vase and watch them slowly decay... somehow, they become more beautiful and change colours as they die. Lovely.
