I started with an image torn from a bird food catalogue which was on nice thick paper and used Winsor and Newton Galeria matt medium to stick it down.
I tried to choose acrylic paint colours close to the image as possible and mixed them with the matt medium. I then randomly painted splodges to fill the remaining white space on the left page but tried to paint some background looking flower blooms on the right side.
Then to blend image more into backgroound, I extended the branches and added some leaves and buds - I used PaperArtsy French Roast Fresco Finish paint.
I finished with a digital quote ..... not certain who it is by.
My feathered garden friends have played a big part in our life over the last 20 or so years :)
And while I am forever out in the garden feeding the birds, Dave is usually in the kitchen looking after my food needs and is busy baking all sorts of things.... breads on this occassion :)
OK that's all for today,
Thanks for stopping by..

This is a fantastic post Gill. I love your latest page and ow you made it. It doesn't look (in the final page) that you added a torn photo. Thanks so much for joining us at ARt Journal Journey. And you food needs looks absolutely yummy! Have a fabulous new week. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteYour journal page is a delight, Gill, love the colours, too. And birds are always worth watching, never a dull moment there. And that bread....Could I borrow Dave for a few days?! Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteA beautiful quote and a fabulous spread, Gill. And your blackbird photo brought tears to my eyes... In another life (!?!) I had a tiny garden absolutely filled with birds, some of whom became precious. One particular blackbird used to meet me at the top of the street and fly down from house to house until we both reached the house I lived in... where I dutifully fed him sultanas after I'd opened the front door. He would then come to my feet to get them...and even, on occasion, come into the kitchen through the open door! He looked a bit like your 'tatty bird' but he had a damaged leg - I nicknamed him 'Scruff' and really missed him when he stopped coming. You are so blessed!
ReplyDeleteYour spread is a wonderful celebration of the privilege of being part of nature. I love the way you added the continuing branches and flowers. So pleased you played in our 'In My Garden' challenge at TIOT :-)

Gill this is fabulous! I love how you've made the background for your blackbird, and in the words of Eric Morcambe - you can't see the join! I know I'm showing my age now, but seriously this is wonderful. Have a very happy week, Sue xx
ReplyDeleteI love this page dear Gill. Simply awesome and you are so lucky to have these birds in your garden and your wonderful hubby.

ReplyDeleteWOW Gill, your journal page is stunning! The background you created match the gorgeous photo perfectly, I love that quote! The breads looks delicious, I'm starving now :)
ReplyDeleteHugs, Tammy
I am incredibly impressed with this latest journal entry, Gill. The way you extended the bird and how you were able to make the torn part look the same as the background is stunning. Your drawing skills are equal to your collaging skills. This is amazing and perfect for your theme at Art Journal Journey.
ReplyDeleteLove this Gill, love the quote and most gorgeous bird and colours....
ReplyDeleteThe bread reminds me of my weekly baking days with a friend of mine years ago when the kids were younger...always a show [smell] stopper for people walking bye.xx
This is just gorgeous! How you started with the photo and how you added the flowers in the same colors and continued the branches - now I cannot say where the photo ended and where your painting began! And you found the best fitting quote!
ReplyDeleteYour own photo of this black cute bird is excellent (why did you not use it on your page?)
It's so nice of you feeding the birds in your garden ... I had luck too, some day a dove came into our garden and drunk from my pond in a pot (with some plants and a fountain), I made a video - it was such a nice scene!
Oh, this bread look very very delicious!
Liebe Grüße, Rike xx
Its a wonderful page Gill. You created a fantastic background for the bird, its a good quote as well.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and seeing the photos the bread looks delicious.

wonderful spread, gill! i also could watch birds for hours!! i esp like the photo of the bird with the tousled feathers:) ... and now i have the smell of fresh bread in my nose;) xx
ReplyDeleteThat's terrific how you have integrated the printed bird with your painting and it all makes a lovely summery painting.
ReplyDeleteI love your own garden blackbird - has he just had a bath or is he always delightfully disheveled? Your wood pigeon is so sweet too, they are such gentle birds.
Dave's breads look very professional and like Johanna I can actually smell them.
What a wonderful idea for the page, Gill, and I love how you created. Thanks for the in-progress shots!
ReplyDeleteI share your love of birds and can spend lots of time watching & enjoying them. We feed sparingly in the summer, but pull out the big guns in October.
And I love the photos of Dave's bread. My hubby likes to bake bread, too:)
Great post!
Oh I like I like very much. Was amazed to see how you had matched the paint colour up to the magazine piece - what a fantastic job - seamless! A great subject, the eyes of the blackbirds always fascinate me when I see them in the garden. Such a super choice for your subject of 'eyes'
ReplyDeleteHugs, Neet xx
