Art for Art's sake and a 'thing with wings'

July looks like being a fun month as Chris from Pearshapedcrafting has chosen "Art for Art's sake" as this months theme at AJJ and it's about having fun with arty techniques and our art supplies.

I was wearing a brand new white T-shirt and apron when making this and managed to get to the end without splashing any paint or ink on me (as far as I can see) phew!!!!

I will be glad when that song stops playing in my head too... so I had to add the words to the page of course.

I started with some blue card and used some cheap gouache paint that I need to use up before it dries and painted a bit of an abstract design. ( dear hubby got me some better quality paint and of course the cheap stuff gets overlooked).

Then I dribbled some inks down the page - the black one is in a spray bottle and hardly used and for some reason I seem to just dab it on things as sprays always seem to clog.
After drying the drips I added some white acrylic ink and for the first time made use of those little credit card looking things shops give out and used that to swipe the ink.
After writing the words with a black Posca pen I found a stamp I never use to add some fine dots.. the stamp is pear shaped (made by Stampscapes) and called a toner applicator.

And I have a whimsical page using Neocolor 2's and a little coloured pencils and gouache which I shall link to TIOT   for 'Things with wings' and MOO Mania    for 'Your favourite colours'.
I'm not sure what my favourite colour is - I love all colours, but I think it depends on the shade and what else they are with.

thats all today..
thanks for stopping by.

  1. You are spoiling us today Gill, not one but two super pages. I love the dots, dabs and scraps on the first piece of art.. do you also have the *FEAR* of the black spray..?? I have a fear of black as my art teacher (many moons ago) would tell me that black was not a colour, I still use with trepidation to this day :D
I have to say I have fallen in love with your whimsical neoII's page, your birdy is adorable singing his sweet song. I would not sleep if I had to chose a favourite colour as they are all amazing... even BLACK !!
Enjoy your evening.. Creative wishes Tracey x

  3. Good for you to stay clean while painting. I can't do that so I am impressed. I love the abstract art and those colors-woon. And what a cute little birdie too. The crown really finishes him off. I bet his song is something you want to whistle along with.Hope all is well. Hugs-Erika

  4. You are the second person (Chris being the first) to mention a song which I am not familiar with. However, I like the page you created with all the swirls. One of my favorite techniques is card swiping. The paint dries so fast and you use very little. I was glad to see you using it for the first time. I'm sure by now it won't be the last. Thanks for sharing this with us at Art Journal Journey.

Of course, I think your darling bird, which is beautifully painted, is simply adorable, too.

  6. Love both of these - I too love to apply paint with old credit cards/store cards - but I really love your bird. The gorgeous bright colours you used are amazing.. they work so well together. Love the expression you managed to give him and the shape of his head!

Lastsongitis my son calls it - it's annoying but also good! I LOVE music!

    Have a lovely Tuesday :-)

  9. These are fabulous Gill, and also a little bit spooky as I've just watched a You Tube video about 10CC. Your bird is wonderful, so sweet, and as for my favourite colour - I'd just have to pick bright! Have a very happy week, Sue xx

  11. I adore this Gill! I love scraping with old credit type cards and so pleased to see that you used the technique for the first time ( I bet it won't be the last) The black and white gives such a lift to these lovely colours! Great that you added the title too and I do apologise for the ear worm...which has affected me too! Thank you so much for joining in at AJJ! Your bird is a real cutie and I'm so pleased you joined us at Try It On Tuesday! Hugs,Chrisx

  15. What fabulous art! I love to try out new art techniques and using a credit card to apply inks and paints it always fun ...lol 😉. Your page looks wonderful with all the paints and patterns you used, and if you hadn't worn the apron you can guess what would have happened - covered ...lol 😀. Your whimsical bird caught my eye though, isn't he adorable in his crown (I think it's a he anyway ...lol 😋). The colours you blended for the background are just amazing. Thanks so much for joining us at Try it on Tuesday and wishing you a happy week! J 😊 x

  17. Bold and beautiful "art for art's sake" page, Gill. Lovely scraping, dabbing and doodling. The white scribbling really pulls it all together. Your royal bird is charming.

  18. It's funny that you were wearing a brand new white T-shirt while creating such a beautiful page! I am impressed that your white T-shirt did not hinder you to play with paints and spray bottles in such a colourful way!
Your thing with wings has much personality - and the chosen colours are fabulous!
Wish you a happy Sunday! Rike xx

  19. I was fascinated by your colourful abstract and all the techniques and equipment you used. Dribbling inks and swiping inks sounds like a lot of art fun. Of course you would wear a new white t-shirt to play with all the colours! What a miracle it stayed white. Dave is such a treasure buying you good gouache.
And then I found the little bird. He is a darling, a star in his colourful world, maybe a Bird Prince? He would make a marvellous Happy Birdday greetings card
